Nine-year rule
2010-10-16

On renewal in 2011, all standard hackney and taxi licences can be associated only with vehicles that are less than nine years old. The age of the vehicle is calculated from the exact date on which it was first registered (day, month and year). If the vehicle was imported, the age is calculated from the date on which it was originally registered in its country of origin. You should check this date carefully (on the Vehicle Licensing Certificate) – the year shown on the vehicle’s number plate is not a sufficiently accurate indicator of the vehicle’s exact age. From 2012 all standard hackney and taxi licences will also require a vehicle that meets requirements for luggage capacity and interior dimensions. You should always check the Commission’s model report database before purchasing a vehicle. For more details see the Commission’s Information Guide G6 – Changing your vehicle.
